Abstract:

This DBP project studies how HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) affects brain structure (using anatomical MRI) and white matter fiber integrity (using diffusion tensor imaging; DTI) in two separate HIV-infected populations. HIV enters the central nervous system (CNS) early after infection causing brain injury, even in the absence of substantial neuronal infection. The disease frequently involves the basal ganglia, brainstem and deep white matter structures.
